WOODLAND GRANGE Nr YORK

We held our first Working Tests on this fantastic ground, Patrick and Louise Wilkinson kindly invite us to run a competition on their 100 acres of woodland and the judges could not resist the opportunity of setting one of the tests on the lake that forms part of the Garden.

Patrick went above and beyond, moving paddocks to create a great parking area, creating an exercise area and going out early to put up directional signs.

Our thanks to the judges Paul Stogden, Paul Hasney, Charlotte Brown and Teresa Middlewood who stepped in at short notice as the fourth judge. The judges set some interesting tests, the challenge being to find areas where the host had not worked his dog and the judges definitely succeeded.

Our helpers today, Simon, Nick, George, Twigg, Tracey, Wendy, Louise, Emilia, Sandra, Tom and Brent, we couldn’t run competitions without helpers and today we had plenty with some competing either in the morning or the afternoon and then helping when not competing. A big thank you to you all.

As always thank you to our sponsors Vet Spec and Sporting Saint for providing vouchers and goodie bags for award winners.

OPEN WORKING TEST

26th APRIL 2026

ROSEDALE, N YORKS

What a fantastic day we had, having arrived at the meeting point in cold, grey conditions with everyone freezing, we moved in convoy across the moor and dropped down into the valley where the sun shone and coats were left in cars.

Huge thank you to Mr David Ross and Head Keeper Jimmy Brough for allowing the club to run our competitions on this glorious ground.

Our judges, taking care to use the areas specified by the Head Keeper, set challenging tests which stretched the dogs. Thank you Lee Hartis, Glyn Coupar, Darren Thompson and Daniel Marx, the club and competitors appreciate the time you give up to support our sport.

These events could not run without helpers, this time we were short of dummy throwers and one of the competitors gave up his run to enable others to compete – Thank you Steve, and the rest of the team Simon, Alan, Sandra, Hannah, Lucy, Jen and as always Sharon and Twigg for holding the fort setting out the admin area while I stayed at the meeting point to escort competitors over the moor.

The club sponsors Vet Spec ensuring the award winners received Vouchers, whilst Sporting Saint donate Goodie Bags. Their continued sponsorship is much appreciated.

I should at this point acknowledge our great competitors, because of the issues accessing the valley some vehicles are restricted from going across the moor. The competitors were brilliant sorting lifts to get everyone and their dogs down, with one competitor even driving another competitor’s car down and more to the point out of the valley. Thank you also to Mark for taking the trailer down and Steve for bringing it out, my car would not have managed that hill or the turn at the top with a trailer on.

Congratulations to all in the awards:

1st Maplecrest Nero – Charlotte Brown winning the Johnson Shield and Keepsake Trophy in addition to the Vet Spec Voucher and Sporting Saint Goodie Bag.

2nd Hazeloaks Goose – Brian Dodsworth winning a Vet Spec Voucher and Sporting Saint Goodie Bag

3rd Botcherghyll Elder – Hannah Welsh winning a Vet Spec Voucher and Sporting Saint Goodie Bag

4th Troddenmills Keen as a Bean – Wendy Glue winning a Vet Spec Voucher

Apologies to the competitors for the mistake on the certificates and I will ensure you receive corrected copies.

The photos show the views across the moor on the way home along the old railway track.

Next year this test will be held in March and we will be able to access all areas, if you have an Open Dog, don’t miss the opportunity to run on ground like this.

NOVICE WORKING TEST

5TH APRIL 2026

FARNDALE

Easter Sunday saw Three Ridings Labrador Club hold it’s first Working Test of  the 2026 season and what a great day we had. Four seasons in one day,  weather wise, although for the most part we stayed warm and dry.

By  kind permission of Farndale Estate Sporting we get to use this  fantastic ground, with special thanks to Paul Wright for facilitating our access to some great areas. This year we sneaked into April, so avoided  the moorland for the tests but made use of the woodland and farmland bordering the moor with views of Gods Own Country in the background.  What better place to be.

Thank you to our judges,

Thomas Bushby

Ian Palmer

Rebecca Thistle

Mark Wilson

who worked well together setting challenging tests which were achievable, evidenced by taking 13 dogs from a field of 26 through to a  walk up after the cut.

As always we couldn’t run these events without helpers and leaving family on Easter Sunday to come and throw/place dummies was extra special. Thank you to Rob, Tony, Twigg, Steve, Sharon and Mia, joined by  Lucy and Simon, first time helpers who thoroughly enjoyed their day.

We are lucky to be sponsored by Vet Spec and Sporting Saint, thank you for your continued support.

The Results

After the Walked Up and a run off for 1st and 2nd place were as follows:

1st Sandra Ellis with Etomanni Ohio

2nd Kate Kinder with Kindermear Arrow

3rd Gwen Finch with Ploughmans Teal

4th Paul Wright withSudforth Rosie

COM Paul Owens with Fryish Black Island Iced Tea of Koromas

COM Teresa Middlewood with Lynsykes Envoy

The final thanks go to all the competitors who made it a lovely day.  The atmosphere was great, we had some people new to Working Tests and the more experienced handlers made them welcome looking after them. We hope you enjoyed your cream eggs and look forward to seeing you all again.

NOVICE & OPEN WORKING TEST

IST JUNE 2025

WARTER PRIORY

Sunday June 1st we returned to the prestigious Warter Priory Estate, Nr Pocklington, it is a fantastic shooting estate and the club is privileged to be able to run on the ground by kind permission of the Healey Family and Head Keeper Frank Croft. Amy Wilcock welcomed us to the estate on behalf of the Healey Family and Frank Croft, we thank Amy for co-ordinating the diary to allow the club to run on the ground.

The Tests & Helpers

Our judges for the day Graham Slater, Wendy Glue, Darren Thompson and Daryl Boarder, made great use of the ground by setting tests which challenged the dogs, especially those unused to the hills and the distraction of game scent.

Whilst the competitors walked from test to test along the bottom of the valley on the track. The dogs and the helpers had to negotiate some very steep climbs up hills, the club thanks the helpers for their time and their stamina, helping at Warter is definitely not for the faint hearted. Alan B, Liz B, Nick M, Martin R, Pat P, Paul S and Paul B taking on the challenge in the morning and Liz B, Alan B, Simon P, Lucy E, Mia CH, Steve C and Carolyn B for covering the afternoon shift. Last but not least Sharon C who is becoming my right hand at competitions and Elaine O’B for all your help with the administration of the day.

These days could not run without helpers and this is the first time for a long time that Three Ridings has struggled to get enough people, and I climbed a hill with a bag full of dummies in the morning to ensure the test could run. It is important that everyone who competes gives a bit back by helping clubs on competition days, if people do not volunteer competitions will not run. As several of yesterdays helpers commented and they had learnt a lot by watching the dogs work, it is definitely one of the best ways to learn.

THE RESULTS

We thank our sponsors Vet Spec and Sporting Saint who kindly donate vouchers and gifts to those placed 1st– 3rd.

To be placed, let alone win on the ground at Warter is an achievement in itself, so congratulations to all the competitors in the awards and to those who may not have been placed but took on the challenge.

18TH MAY 2025

BUSK HILL

On a somewhat breezy and chilly May day, the club held it’s first and I hope not last Working Test at Buskhill, by kind permission of James and Elizabeth Needler, great ground, thank you James for offering it to the club. We would also like to thank Vale  of York for sharing the ground with us, the two clubs continue to work together covering the same geographical area and supporting each other in all we do.

Thank you to our judges, Sinead Wilkinson, Mark Wilson, Teresa Middlewood and  Charlotte Brown, who used all the varieties the ground offered to  ensure each static, tested a different skill and that they were adjusted  to suit the level of each class.

Our helpers on the day, and I’m sorry if I have missed anyone off, Jane,  Fred, Steve C, Sharon, Steve B, Cath, Jane P, Lucy, Hannah, Tom, Elaine, Sheila, Sophie, Emma, Kevin, Molly and Twigg. It was fantastic that morning competitors stayed to help in the afternoon and afternoon competitors came early to help in the morning. We could not run events without you, yesterday was a very busy day with a total of 60 competitors split across 3 classes, it was a logistical challenge and the helpers made it easy to make sure the judges had enough support for the variety of tests that were set.

As always, we appreciate the sponsorship from Vet Spec and Sporting Saint providing vouchers and prizes.
